My passion for nutrition rose when I watched a documentary comparing vitamin content of a cup of spinach in 1945, according to this documentary we would now require a whopping 64 cups for the same nutrient intake. As it is beyond our scope and abilities to consume 64 cups of spinach so I started to learn about food, i started to grow my own food.
Whilst I still reach out for the odd convenience foods, as a rule of thumb I cook my own food, refrain from processed foods, I make my own jams, mayonnaise, bake my own bread, I drink herbal teas from the likes of Mutamba and Jatoba and soursop, make hawthorn tinctures for reducing blood pressure and lots more ! Providing a good diary for an assessment is the beginning of the journey. It is very important to ensure the diary is as detailed as possible (in addition to the food content, it is important to establish energy levels throughout the day as well as our psychological state). We can work on the best way of ensuring the recorded information is a true reflection of one’s dietary status and work from there onwards.
Part or the food diary will cover allergies, likes and dislikes. In the event that the conditions outplayed in the information provided by the client are beyong my comprehension, I will always refer the client to a trained medical professional. Most people live with some sort of allergies so coupled with likes and dislikes, it is a common factor in assisting clients with their diet.
I have worked with people who consume some ‘junk food’ yet still manage to have a decent overall diet. This is a very broad spectrum question and each individual case needs to be reviewed and the assessed accordingly. I like a challenge :)
